Lembor Rice Field

Lembor Rice Field

  • Landscapes & Nature
  • Lembor District, West Manggarai Regency, Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara

Lembor Rice Field is a massive, sweeping agricultural landscape located in the Lembor district, situated along the Trans-Flores highway just about an hour's drive east of Labuan Bajo. Unlike the circular, hidden web-like paddies of Cancar, Lembor is celebrated for its sheer scale, standing as the largest flat lowland rice-producing basin on Flores Island. Fed by a complex traditional irrigation network, this expansive green valley forms a striking contrast to the rugged volcanic mountains that frame it.

For travelers, Lembor Rice Field provides a refreshing and scenic roadside escape, offering a peaceful window into the vast, rural agricultural heartbeat of mainland Flores.

Best Activities to Do on Lembor Rice Field

  • Admiring the Endless Flat Emerald Horizon: The defining experience at Lembor is standing along the roadside or elevated edges to gaze across thousands of hectares of flat, contiguous rice paddies. The sight of a perfectly level, bright green or golden sea of rice stretching all the way to the base of the distant mountain ranges creates a deeply tranquil and majestic visual composition.

  • Strolling Through the Rural Agricultural Pathways: Visitors can take a leisurely walk along the network of earthen dikes and concrete irrigation canals that crisscross the fields. Walking through the paddies allows you to feel the cool highland breeze, watch traditional farming techniques up close, and witness water buffaloes or small tractors tilling the rich volcanic soil.

  • Interacting with the Warm Farming Community: Lembor is a living, working agricultural hub. Taking a break at one of the small roadside pavilions (lopo-lopo) offers a wonderful opportunity to chat with the local Manggarai farmers. You can learn about their multi-annual planting cycles, see how they dry harvested grains under the sun, and experience their genuine, unhurried hospitality.

Additional Tips for Your Travel Content:

  • The Ultimate Road Trip Pitstop: Highlight to your audience that Lembor is the perfect natural rest stop during an overland journey from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng or Bajawa. It features numerous local restaurants and viewpoints right along the highway where travelers can stretch their legs and grab a meal with a view.

  • Seasonal Dynamic: Inform your travelers that the valley's color palette shifts beautifully with the seasons. It turns a vibrant, glowing neon green from January to March during the growing peak, and transforms into a spectacular, shimmering golden blanket around April and May just before the primary harvest.
